Mailbox Cover Makeover

Did you know you can paint those vinyl mailbox covers when they get faded? I love this recycled mailbox cover. Such a quick and easy DIY project!

Hey y’all!  I know Halloween is upon us so I wanted to share this quick and easy Mailbox Cover Makeover!  Even though it’s a little late to try this for Halloween, you could use this tutorial to create your own Mailbox Cover for any holiday or special occasion.  I think you’re going to love it!

I started off with a faded mailbox cover.  I was about to trash it when I thought of trying to paint it.  These are made of a thick vinyl but the color in one area was almost gone.

I whipped out a black FLAT can of spray paint. I wasn’t sure if it would adhere to the vinyl but I really had nothing to lose.

Then, I sprayed the entire cover black.

After it dried, I used painter’s tape to make stripes.  I used black and white stripes for Halloween, but you could easily use red and white for Christmas or Red, White and Blue for July 4th…you get the idea.

When you apply the painter’s tape, make sure you don’t pull it too tight. This is where I messed up. There was a little bend in the vinyl near the center and the painters tape pulled up a little causing my lines not to be crisp. Make sure the tape is tight!

After it dried I pulled the painter’s tape off to my (less than perfect) stripes. I kept rolling with it because it wasn’t going to be noticeable from the road.

To add a little touch of Halloween (and cover some of those wonky lines) I got some scrap orange vinyl from my Sister.  (She has a store!  Check it out!)  I cut a few dots and the word “boo!” out.  I just did this free hand but you could use a Cricut if you struggle to write backwards.

I laid out my dots and letters for placement and then pulled off the vinyl and stuck them down.

  1. I didn’t know you could buy a mailbox cover, let alone DIY one like this! How cool, I would love to decorate mine for a holiday. Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. These have been really popular in my area for several years now. I have several of them and switch them out for each season. They will last several years since you only use them for a couple of months at the most but eventually fade out. Thanks for your comment! 🙂
